Farm-Based Education for Utah's At-Risk Students
Tifie met the Director of Roots Charter High School, Tyler Bastian, and was immediately drawn to his passion for providing character-based education, giving students real-world opportunity for learning and the hands-on laboratory of learning through farming and gardening. Tifie’s founders, Robert and Ange, have strong ties to sustainable gardening, farming, and animal husbandry, so the kindred values immediately brought us together. Tifie supports Roots throughout operational expenses, an annual Thanksgiving
We feasted with students in our seventh annual Thanksgiving dinner with Barebones and The Blended Table. The students have especially been hit hard this year by the economic recession, with many taking part time jobs to help support their families. We’ve seen an increase in domestic abuse cases, divorce and homelessness among students compared to years past. The dark seems dark, but the light at Roots is brighter. We continue to do what we can to support teachers and students there, within our own team at Tifie and Barebones, but especially through inviting our greater network. .
“Roots made me soft,” she says. As a self-proclaimed “fighter”, the school culture, teachers and Farm have given her a new take on life. She’s given school tours to Lt. Governor Spencer Cox, Young Living Essential Oils and Traeger. Each time, she shares a new story of how Roots has changed her perspective on hope, her own future and how she sees herself. She embodies the Roots way. Watch her story in this video.
