Sustainable access to nutritious food

Tifie’s Founder’s, Robert and Angè Workman, live a self-sufficient life, closing connected to the earth and its bounty, growing their own food and raising animals, and sharing their abundance with others at the Tifie Ranch. Access to healthy food is essential to any child and family, but the connection to food, where it actually comes from and how it grows, is transformative. The definition of “food insecurity'' is the lack of access to enough food for all household members. In America, an estimated 15 million households were food insecure. Tifie supports local efforts in Utah to help hungry children as well as large scale agriculture projects in Congo.

Power of Agriculture

Agriculture is twice as effective at reducing poverty by raising income, generating employment and reducing food cost, especially for the rural poor. By providing training and opportunities for farmers in the Dumi Plateau of Democratic Republic of Congo, nutrition increased for children, child mortality decreased, financial stability increased for individual families, among other. We saw hope arise when basic needs were being met – the increase in individual gardens and a way to bring produce to the market increased the economic conditions of the area over the course of the 8 years we were there. We are excited to be supporting new agriculture initiatives in the DRC with Break the Chain of Poverty.

Feeding the Children

Reach the Dream Foundations provides schooling and support for children in Cape Maclear, a small lake town in southern Malawi. We learned about Overton Deco and the good work he’s doing for the children and teachers in his area. He started the Reach the Dream Foundation, which supports the local school.  He provides porridge for also 300 nursery and elementary school kids every day, and also helps pay for teacher salaries. He sends us photos regularly of the children at school and says ‘thank you’ for the support.

Food At Roots

When Tifie and Barebones first toured Roots Charter High School, they learned that many students live in a food desert and come to school hungry. They coordinated a food pantry for students, breakfast donation from local bakeries, and have provided Thanksgiving Lunch to Roots students for seven years. In addition to prepared food for students to take home, the gardens at Roots  provide a bounty of fresh produce for kids and their families in the summer and fall.
