2014 In Review: Green Urban Lunchbox

Volunteers in the Layton orchard
We at Tifie love partnering with projects that take care of basic needs of humanity. When we found out about Green Urban Lunchbox’s program that helps people grow healthy food for their families, it was an obvious yes. They do so many great food programs in the Salt Lake area, from a mobile greenhouse, backyard farm programs for the elderly, help and harvest of backyard fruit trees, and the program we helped with, a community farm and orchard in Layton, Utah.

An unused stretch of forgotten orchards owned by UDOT was transformed into an producing fruit trees as well as farm land for people who want to learn the ropes in food production. Tifie helped provide a BareBones garden tools library, Goal Zero lights, and donated man-hours to help prepare the 5 acres for its new farmers-in-training. This year, Green Urban Lunchbox has trained 13 aspiring farmers with mentorship and training with experienced growers. The new farmers give back portions of their harvest to local food assistance programs in the area.

We love that Green Urban Lunchbox is creating opportunity for people to dig in the dirt, growing their own nutritious and affordable food. And of course, they encourage farm participants to give pack portions of their harvest to local food assistance programs.

Grow. Eat. Give. A great organization, and a great program. For more info, visit the community orchard’s webpage here.
